Local martial artists shine

Rohnert Park’s newly formed tournament karate team, led by Sensei Tony Johnson of Martial Arts Academy, completed its first tournament.

A large learning curve was expected, but it came quicker than anticipated as the seven-member team brought home ten medals.

Mike Anderson earned 3rd place in forms, 3rd place in weapons and 2nd place in fighting.

Omar Mendez was 2nd place in forms and 2nd place in fighting. John Sciamanna placed 2nd in weapons and 3rd in fighting, while Beverly Sciamanna took 2nd place in fighting and 4th in weapons.

Dominick Pelayo was 2nd in fighting, and Daniel Mendez, the youngest competitor on the team who just turned five took 3rd place in fighting.
